Acid-Base Balance: Why Should You Care About Acid-Base Balance?

Written By Sabrina Lutz – March 5, 2025

Let’s talk balance, not just work-life balance, but the kind that keeps your body feeling strong, energised, and, let’s be honest, less bloated and perhaps sluggish. I’m talking about acid-base balance.

And guess what? Our modern lifestyles aren’t exactly helping. Between stress, coffee, processed foods, and spending way too much time sitting (hello, Netflix marathons and long workdays!), our bodies tend to tip toward too much acidity.

Let’s break it down.

Why should you care about acid-base balance?

Your body naturally works to keep its pH in check, but if it leans too acidic for too long, you might start feeling it. Think fatigue, joint pain, headaches, and bloating.

What’s throwing your pH off? (And no, it’s not lemons!)

It’s a common myth that acidic-tasting foods (like citrus) make your body more acidic. The real culprits are:

Too much protein, not enough greens

Protein is essential, but when it’s out of balance with alkaline foods, it can shift your body toward acidity. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and even whole grains release acidifying components when broken down. The fix?Load up on green veggies!

Too much sitting, not enough moving

Ever feel stiff after a long day at your desk? A sedentary lifestyle doesn’t just affect your muscles—it also slows down acid elimination, making your body work harder to stay balanced. Is there a solution? yes, movement can help! Walk, stretch, do a dance in the morning while getting ready, anything to get that circulation going.

Stress

Stress doesn’t just mess with your mind; it steals your body’s alkaline minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium, making you more acidic. Ever feel drained after a stressful week? That’s your body telling you it needs a little TLC. Try deep breathing, yoga, or just a good laugh with friends (laughter is definitely alkalising).

Processed foods & sugar AKA the usual suspects

We all love a treat, but refined sugar, sodas, and processed foods push your pH into the acidic zone. Plus, they cause inflammation and energy crashes. The key? Balance. Swap in whole foods when you can, and don’t stress over the occasional indulgence.

Poor Sleep = Poor pH

Lack of sleep increases stress hormones, which throws off your acid-base balance. A solid night’s sleep isn’t just about beauty rest, it’s a reset button for your whole system.

How to Bring Back the Balance (Without Overhauling Your Life)

✔️ Eat More Alkalising Foods: Think leafy greens, avocados, nuts, seeds, and fresh herbs. If your plate looks like a rainbow, you’re on the right track!

✔️ Hydrate Like You Mean It: Water helps flush out excess acids. Bonus points for herbal teas or water with a squeeze of lemon (yep, lemon is alkalizing in the body!).

✔️ Move Daily: You don’t need to hit the gym for hours, just move. Walk, dance, stretch, your body will thank you.

✔️ Chill Out (seriously): Prioritise relaxation. A 5-minute breathing exercise, journaling, or a good old-fashioned bubble bath can help keep stress (and acidity) at bay.

✔️ Sleep Like It’s Your Job: Your body does its best repair work at night. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep, go to bed between 10pm to 10:30pm, your skin, energy, and mood will show the difference.

Bottom Line, Balance is Key!

No need to obsess over every bite, just be mindful of adding more greens, movement, hydration and balancing out the acidic culprits. Small, consistent changes can help you feel stronger, more energised, and healthier long-term.

Now, tell me, what’s your go-to way to de-stress and stay balanced?
